I can’t believe that I was JUST emailing Katelyn James, my wedding photographer & inspiration and asking her how she got started and now people are emailing me with the same question! It’s amazing! There is one thing across the board I tell EVERYONE…and I still do it to this day, and even one day if I’m as good as I ever think I could get…I’ll STILL do it…………….PRACTICE.

If you want to excel at anything, practice. If you want to conquer your fears and take on your weaknesses- practice. For me it was TRULY sunlight. Keyword, was. Now, it can still be hard depending on the time of day, but I now have figured out what works best for me shooting in sunlight. A lot of people seem surprised when you tell them you want to shoot closer to sunset when the sun is lessening because they think, oh sunshine- great! Happy sunlight for our photos, perfect..but it’s tricky. There are shadows and harshness that can be hard to tackle behind the lens. I have recently found a way to use my sunlight as a beautiful backlit haze around my subjects and I LOVE it but it’s hard!

Practicing means shooting for fun & building experience. I know we are all busy, but going out and shooting without getting paid is a way to shoot freely & prove to your art that this is something you LOVE for the sake of itself and not just for money.

I just wanted to share a few images from my recent romp with my partner & friend, Tara Liebeck. She is one of my favorite people in my life because she’s always willing to help others & share, which pretty much makes her a gem in the industry. Whenever I learn something new or a trick, this is the first person I run to tell and HOPE that I can finally teach HER something every once in a while! 🙂 Enjoy!
