So, yesterday…I turned 32! And I can hardly believe I’m in my 30’s still. I truly feel like I’m 25 but I don’t feel how I felt at 25…if that makes sense. There is a wave of maturity that I kind of love along with maintaining a playful mentality that keeps me feeling for lack of a better word, young! And I know I am still young…isn’t age just a state of mind anyway? I know some very young 80 year olds and some very old 25 year olds. I “feel” like I’m in my 20’s still but with lots more bills, kids and responsibilities! I do LOVE my thirties!! 🙂
Sometimes my absolute best ideas are the most impulsive and last minute ones…and I know that based on how I’ve run this business and blog for the past six years. “Can’t hurt” ideas are ideas that don’t cost anything or effect anyone but me..and never have the ability to really be a negative thing, but rather, a lesson…so that’s what THIS idea is all about. A couple of days ago, after enjoying New York with Mike…I thought to myself…would I be able to go a year without buying myself ANY CLOTHES or ANY JEWELRY for a year? An entire year?
Mike laughed! He basically pointed out that I don’t shop a ton for myself to begin with, and he’s right. When I shop, it’s rare…but with that being said, could I go an entire year with no new shoes, jackets, dresses, shirts, pants, necklaces, earrings, etc? Can I do this?! That’s a LONG time!!! But…you know what? I think I’m up for the challenge. I think that part of living a simple life is really focusing on what you have and what you really need, and I am so curious to see how long I can last realizing that in fact I do not NEED any more items of clothing because I am able to survive happily on what I already have. We are moving into our first home so occasionally be buying things for that…but this challenge is specifically clothes and jewelry for myself.
Now, if I run out of something necessary for some reason (pretty sure I have enough underwear but I mean, if it all starts to go missing I’m gonna need to run out, haha!) — I’ll grab it and just document why I got it. But for the most part…I think I am going to be able to do this! I’m not gonna say no to an occasional gift from Mike if it’s something he knows I may like but I’m not going to put it in the cart and purchase myself….until my next birthday.
This is a crazy experiment in the eyes of some, but think about what so many people don’t have. I’ve had a homeless family member and I stepped over too many human beings in New York City sleeping on the street with nothing to their name. I’m going to try so hard to prove I can go an entire year without buying any clothes and jewelry for myself…and I’m pretty sure I’m going to survive it 🙂
A message to my shop owner friends..this doesn’t mean I can’t buy gifts for OTHERS! Will definitely continue to promote and support your businesses!!!! :):)
And just a side note, there is nothing wrong with shopping for yourself. When you bust your butt going to work or running your business, you DESERVE to treat yourself! Some people also are amazing with fashion and it’s part of their brand/business. I get it! This is just a personal experiment to see how I can manage not feeling the need to purchase anything per season when I usually give into to a latest style, trend or color palette. I’m gonna live right? Someone make sure to tell me I can get through this hahaha!
