CLIC Conference + a Giveaway! | Photography

We were in the car on the way back from a rare Saturday off. In tears at certain points during the day that we were actually together as a family on the weekend. My husband’s grandma was in a temporary rehabilitation center after a small accident and because of the way my business is structured after three years of trying to “figure it out”– I have clients that allow me to shoot their bridals and engagements on the weekdays so we got to visit her, just like we needed to do. It means so much to me that now we will be missing less events, birthdays, family affairs because I’ll be only booking weddings on the weekends and that my clients are such dolls and allow me to have this family time while my babies are very young!!!

As we neared the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel, I opened my email on my phone and saw one from a girl named Kelly asking about speaking at this new women’s conference for photographers in Raleigh next Spring..and I was floored! SO honored, so excited, and so on board! After speaking to her and adoring her the next day on the phone, it was a done deal. I was SO in πŸ™‚ That leads me to the giveaway! This is a GREAT networking opportunity because it’s including NC and Virginia photographers (and anyone else who wants to come) and gives us a chance on the East Coast to get together and talk shop. I have been doing photography since I can’t even remember but I have run my own business since the day before I turned 18. I am in my 12th year and I can’t be more excited!! My favorite thing to do is make a parent smile (ok, and CRY) when they see the portraits of their babies all grown up. Senior portraits are my absolute favorite and that’s why I started this business, when I was a senior in high school. I still have a lot of growing to do, but don’t we all!!?

  2. Jessica Rose says:

I love this industry because it’s about more than taking a picture of a pretty face. It’s about capturing moments – which are fleeting. And just like the emotion that we can remember feeling from that moment, a photograph can last forever. The people who I have met in this industry have been nothing but supportive and uplifting of others who are just as in love with photography as they are. I don’t love photos – I love people, and moments, and raw emotion that you just can’t hold onto unless you snap a photograph of it. If I can make someone feel something when they look at images I’ve produced, I know I’ve done my job right.

  3. I love being in this industry because of people like you! For almost every job I’ve had previously if I didn’t leave it because of military relocation I certainly left because of the people. People so MAKE a job what it is! Being surrounded by encouraging, loving, and worthwhile human beings makes getting through the drama that we inevitably have to deal with clients on worth it!

And of course I love my wonderful clients! I love having a job that makes it so I can be at home for my daughter. I love capturing and preserving memories! I love going to work in my PJs! Really my list is endless!

  4. Leigh Skaggs says:

There are so many reasons that I love being in this industry. I love being able to document such special times in my Clients lives, I love capturing love, I love being able to be available for my Family’s by making my own schedule, I love being able to talk to other people in the industry and learn from them. And the list could go on and on. Congratulations Amanda on being asked to speak at this conference! You deserve it!! πŸ™‚

  5. Elizabeth says:

I LOVE this industry for a million reasons! Mostly because I can be creative, social, spending time outside and traveling, and I’m ALWAYS learning something. Photographers like you make this industry even better by providing a welcoming heart and leading by example. I feel like our community is not just about photography, but its about kindness and helping others. I have never been so inspired, motivated, and fulfilled in my entire life. I have LOVED watching your business grow, and the engagement pictures YOU took of Mark and I changed my life!!! <3

  6. I love being in this industry because while there are a lot of businesses in the world, ours is so special and personal to people. Whether it is a First Birthday, a newborn session, engagements, bridals, weddings, etc. everything is special to someone and that is why they book a photographer. To capture those special, so very important moments. I love the fact that we as photographers can be the ones who capture those special moments and forever freeze them in time to be cherished from generation to generation. Photos are something that unites us around the world. Everyone loves photos and we have the pleasure of taking them. I also love all the wonderful women I have met and network with that have been so supportive and helpful. πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

  7. I love being a photographer because I get to meet so many awesome new people! I love the rush I still get from inquiries. Photography can be scary and challenging. You’re putting yourself and your work out there, and people judge it, or even worse don’t like it. But then you get clients you can grow with. You’re there at their wedding, 1st child, 2nd child, etc. And that is the biggest form of flattery. So all that to say I’m in this business for the challenges and rewards. πŸ™‚

  8. lundyphoto says:

I have met so many great people along my journey as a photographer. Fellow photographers and amazing clients I can now call friends. I also love being in this profession because it gives me the flexibility to be able to do it all…be a hands on mom and a creative.

  9. Amber Lane says:

I love this industry because of all the support I have been given through this journey. There is always something more to learn and the positive feedback, knowledge and friendships I’ve make make me never want to leave this industry! πŸ™‚

  10. The photography industry is pretty amazing! I love all the interaction and encouragement that we can have in online venues and also the connections that come from 2nd shooting for each other. It’s truly remarkable!

  11. elovephotos says:

I love being in this industry because I can help people capture moments in their lives FOREVER! I cherish my childhood images and especially the ones of my own daughter. I love being able to use my talents to help others.

  12. I am in my first full year of taking this on FULL TIME!! Its been a whirlwind of emotions and at times hard, but everytime I step behind the lens and see smiles, first steps, the first kiss as Husband and Wife, a mother gazing at her new baby, a navy sailor scooping his kids up in his arms after a long deployment or children in Christmas hats laughing because Santa is on his way, I am reminded of the importance of my role, to capture these memories and let them live out their moments in real time. I am so honored and blessed to be part of their lives, and love seeing all of these different types of love stories unfold in front of me. It makes the hard times spent as a single mother working full time AND getting off the ground in business so worth it. Now, as a newly wed, I have the support from MY OWN kind of love story, and want to grow and learn more! This conference would absolutely be a way to achieve that growth! Thank you for the opportunity Amanda!

  13. Christina Barnum says:

I love the constant learning and creativity that comes with photography- Though sometimes I get stuck in a rut and have to dig deep for that creativity haha- It keeps me on my toes. I also love making others happy and feel beautiful. Working closely with people And providing beautiful images for them does just that :).. I’ve also been able to incorporate my love for children (former preschool teacher) into this career by working with tons of families and munchkins! Running around like a crazy lady and making crazy noises is just another day on the job πŸ˜‰ Makes me happy! A big bonus is I get to spend lots of time with my own children, my two year old twins, Leah & Mason. πŸ™‚ love it! Would be stoked to win a seat to this awesomeness, but plan on purchasing a ticket if I don’t πŸ˜‰ <3 thanks for the opportunity!

  14. Sarah says:

I love this industry! It allows me to be creative and do what I love. I am able to spend time with my daughter and husband that I wouldn’t be able to at a office job. Not only do I get to see my daughter more, I also capture beautiful memories for her that I only wish I had! I have met some of the most amazing people, from clients to other photographers. The support that people like you and Katelyn give to others is unlike any I’ve seen in other lines of work. You make me (and others I am sure) feel like we can do the impossible. and feel like we aren’t crazy! If we can dream it, we can do it. People actually care. It is what makes our industry different. At the end of the day, we are all photographers and we are in this together.

  15. Catie Ellis says:

I know what photographs have done for me. I have always been camera crazy, but realized the depth of all the hundreds of photos I had when going through the hardest loss of my life, the loss of my father. Those photos saved those amazing moments in time, moments that I can remember exactly how I felt, moments that allow me to imagine exactly how my dad laughed and feel the love that he had for our family. I was so thankful for my mom being so snap happy and enstilling that same love in me. This encouraged me to start my own business. I realized I wanted to share that with others and give them moments of time that can never be taken away. Photos do just that and that is why I LOVE this industry!! Thank you!!

  16. Aside from the excitement that comes along with documenting huge milestones, I love being in this industry because of people like YOU! I have never worked in an industry where people are so giving with their knowledge and time – and I am honored to be a small part of it now. Many congratulations on being asked to speak – I can’t wait to finally meet you there!

  17. When i was younger i had debilitating fear of my future. Isn’t that weird? I was so scared i was going to end up in a dead end job doing the same thing everyday and be miserable. When i say debilitating, i mean just that. It messed with me. I have been blessed through my adult life to have jobs that haven’t trapped me but photography has freed me beyond my wildest dreams. I can be with my family, watch my kids grow, spend time with my husband who is my very best friend, and reunite with friends and people i knew growing up. I get to be up close and personal watching my friends families grow and get to be a part of capturing their precious memories. I get to be creative, i get fulfillment. I get to learn new things from amazingly talented people. i get support from people who laugh and smile and love what they are doing just as much as i do. I LOVE this industry.

  18. Mischa says:

I love being in this industry because I truly feel like I’m making a difference and enriching the lives of others. I decided to become a photographer after realizing how important documenting life through images was to me. My heart is truly invested in my business, and I love it! I am adopted, and the only “memory” I have of my birth mother is a single image; I treasure that image, and I love being able to give others images that they will treasure. I also love how much there is to learn, and love seeing how I have grown as a photographer in my skills with the help and kindness of others and trust of my clients. I can’t imaging doing anything else! πŸ˜€

  19. Wow where do I start. I’m not one for words. I became interested in photography a few years ago, under another photographer, things didn’t work out for me then. So I put the camera down and just said I wasn’t good enough. Fast forward a few years, my husband bought me a new starter camera and said this is so that you become involved in a passion you have. So I did. I took pictures for friends and family and they were so excited with what they saw. So about 3 years later, my biggest fan became sick with cancer so of course I focused so much time and attention into him I started losing what I was doing in the business. Rocky (my husband) use to tell me to go back out there and not worry about him. Sadly I lost him, but this is what he would want me to do! When Rocky became very very ill towards the end I realized I didn’t have family photos of him, me and the girls and I began to think wait this is what I’m suppose to be doing. Why do I not have memories of us as a family? I don’t want someone else to live with the pain that I felt in my heart because I didn’t have enough memories. Photos will always be around, I don’t think they will ever go away and with that we are all creating FOREVER MEMORIES. My husband was my biggest fan sitting here while I was editing or boxing ideas off of him, he was my biggest supporter. I know now that he is gone he is still in my corner. He was the one that told me to follow my dreams and with that that’s what I’m doing. I have started some marketing stuff on my own, but I would like some more guidance so that I’m just not “another” photographer in Hampton Roads. I believe this will be a perfect opportunity for me and my small business I have, which I am extremely proud of! No matter what I will be attending the conference in Raleigh NC! Thanks again Amanda for this opportunity to go and looking forward to your speech !!!!!

  20. S Samone says:

Growing up, I didn’t feel pretty. I wasn’t the tallest, the most beautiful or the smartest. Like most girls, I had low self esteem. What photography did (and still does) for me is allows me to realize the beauty within me. That is why I love this industry. It breathes life into me. Using it as a form of therapy (phototherapy that is), photography allows me to help other young girls and women see their beauty. This industry gives me a gift I can share with others: the gift of joy, happiness and peace. This business, this industry, this art challenges me and pushes me to be better which in turn, allows me the chance to remind us all what we sometimes tend to forget: that we are created in perfection.

  21. Kelly says:

I love working in this field! I’ve loved the art of photography for a very long time and enjoy capturing God’s beautiful artwork. I moved into Portraiture almost 3 years ago and have met so many wonderful clients/friends that just continue to amaze me with their support of my business. The excitement that comes with capturing a beautiful image is unmatched and I can’t imagine working in any other field now. I’d love to attend this conference, it would be a blessing to win! Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us and for this giveaway! πŸ™‚

  22. Becca DuVal says:

I love this industry, and the fabulously talented and motivated people this industry attracts. I’ve met some of my very best friends through this shared love of capturing people’s memories. I can’t wait to see my skills and business evolve thanks to this sort of mentoring from established photographers like yourself πŸ™‚

  23. I love this industry first because of the fact that I get to be a stay at home mom and still run a business doing what I love, and second because of the amazing people that I get to meet. My clients are the sweetest people and I am so thankful that I get to meet them and work with them to capture the ‘joy’ moments in their lives.

  24. I love working in photography because it has given me so much more freedom to spend time with amazing families and share my down time with my own kids on my own terms. I used to teach at a lower income school and I loved the difference I was able to make but my famiy suffered because of the time commitments. Now I can help out at school AND be home for my children while running my business to help keep our household going. I am thrilled at the direction I’m going and Katelyn’s Workshop really pushed me to grow this fall as a photographer in the wedding industry. i would LOVE to continue that growth by learning even more from other amazing women at the conference in March!

  25. I love so many things about this industry. I love the feeling I get when I edit beautiful images that I know will mean SO much to those in them and their families for years and years to come. I love connecting to their emotions. I love the bonds it has created between my clients, myself and my peers. This industry has brought me together with some amazing people who I know will be in my life forever. It has given me even more purpose. ❀️❀️

  26. I like this industry because it allows me to show passion and creativity through photography. I LOVE this industry because of the people I meet!!! πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

  27. I love this industry so much. I consider it such a privilege to be able to do what I love and make a living doing it! Not many people can claim that. I mean, my PASSION and therefore my JOB is to capture people’s emotions, story, and life moments for them to treasure forever. How amazing is that? I was always a very creative person growing up, and I never really found my “niche”. I tried my hand at EVERYTHING. Painting, jewelry-making, knitting, and drawing, you name it, I tried to do it! But one day I picked up a camera and everything kinda “clicked” (pun intended πŸ˜‰ ). I realized that I love taking pictures and photographing people! That is what is so amazing about this industry. Everyone has a story to share (including me & you!) and we are able to share it through our images, our blog posts, and the way we work. It is also really amazing being in an industry where we are all trying to build each other up, and do you realize how rare that is? It’s rather amazing! Instead of fighting over jobs, we will freely recommend other photographers to a client if we just aren’t the right fit for them. Photographers like you, Katelyn James, and J* LOVE helping other photographers and building this industry up is just spectacular!

  28. Since as far back as I can remember, I have always been passionate about creating art and capturing beautiful moments and stories with photography. My art business slowly began to take shape when I was still in high school, and was always a “side job” up until a year and a half ago when I finally took the leap to pursue my business full time. Doing what I love all day, ever day is the most unbelievable feeling. Not only that, but I’ve met so many incredible people in the industry who are so eager to brainstorm, guide, and support others. Some artists create for themselves, but ever since I was young, I wanted to gift, sell and share my work with others. This is perhaps why I became so drawn to photography. Time is precious and it passes far to quickly. I love being able to capture and share single fleeting moments that allow my clients to hold onto a special time and forever remember those they love. In the end, memories will be all that we have.

  29. For me, photography is one of those industries where I think you can go at your own pace – and you can really define yourself and establish your own style and your way of doing things without feeling like you have to give up who you are, or what makes you tick creatively. I spent 3 years really soaking up everything I could about photography to try and define what I love, what makes my photos MINE, and what sparks this part of me that looks for a challenge to grow from. I don’t think a lot of industries out there give you that. You go at their pace, not your own. The beauty of taking my time, setting my own pace, and exploring patiently, for me, has been – much like Amanda’s story – figuring all of this out while juggling a home life and having children. My second baby is due in January, and I can’t tell you how blessed I feel to have these opportunities to develop and grow as a professional while juggling raising my kids, holding down a household, and still loving what I do – but it’s possible, and it’s an amazing feeling. That kind of empowerment is so hard to find, and when you couple that with the emotional side of photography – capturing an instant of time for a client that matters to them – it’s really something special.

  30. Rebecca says:

I love being in this industry because I can be me and you can be you. We find and meet clients that are our long lost family members and we are supposed to be together to capture moments and learn from each other. I love that we can all learn from each other (photogs that is) and that we are all unique in our own way.

  31. Kari Cillo says:

I love this industry more and more for the networking and the AMAZING women I have met. When I started I thought this was a cut throat industry and I would have to make it alone but then I moved to VA and this place has proven the photography industry can be a fun and interactive industry. I LOVE IT!! I love that we can learn from each other, that we can empower and encourage others while growing our own business =) It helps me remember why I chose to be a photographer!!!

  32. I love being part of such a loving and engaging community!! I just started my business this year and the love and support I have received from fellow photogs has been beyond what I would have expected. I started my business because I wanted to give the gift of memories. I had always ‘dabbled’ with photography on and off since I was 15, but I never thought I could make something of myself. My first ‘ah ha’ moment came when my now husband and I were taking our engagement pictures. Our wedding photographer made me fall in love all over again and she made me feel like a million bucks! From that moment on I wanted to be able to make others feel the same way that I felt in that moment. I am excited for such an amazing opportunity to be hitting the East Coast and look forward to hopefully attending!!!

  33. Photography is the most amazing thing that’s ever happened to me (other than my husband and baby girl of course)! After being in the corporate world for a little over 6 years, I found myself stuck in a horrible rut. I cried to my husband all the time telling him how unhappy I was and he really pushed me to go after my dream. He bought me my first camera and a brand new computer plus Photoshop and told me to go for my dream — he’s truly amazing like that. After owning my own business for less than a year, I quit that corporate job and now I am able to do photography full time. I LOVE this industry because it challenges me and I am finally able to be creative! I love meeting new people that I would have never met if it wasn’t for photography, and I feel so blessed to be able to call this my ‘job.’ I adore the fact that I can somewhat ‘make my own rules’ and that no picture has to look like the next photographers. I’m able to pull out my own creative vibes and use them to the fullest. I’m no where near achieving all of my photography goals but that’s the beauty in it — I get to live my life every day doing something I love and truly believe I have found my passion. THAT is why I looooove this industry I have chosen to make a career out of! πŸ™‚

  34. I love creating. I love meeting people. I love hearing life stories. I love learning. I love that I am in an industry that rolls everything I love into an amazing experience, and that I get to share my view of it with the world.

  35. The reason I adore this industry is because of the huge support from people from all over. Because even when you want to give up theres still 10 other people rooting for you. I love it because every shoot we do I tear up knowing 10, 15, or 20 years down the road they will have the images to share with their family, frienda, kids, etc. I love it because the industry just breeds love. Love for each other, love for what we do and love for ourselves.

  36. Photography has always been something I’ve loved, but for a long time, there was no way I could come up with what I needed to get started. I’ve been really blessed the past few years with a good, stable job that has allowed me to do what I love. I am transitioning out of the military soon, and I am really looking forward to continuing in on this journey I have started on which included starting a photography business, working full time and doing school online, while juggling being a mom to a little one (with the business) to finally being able to devote more time to the business. Come next summer, my business will hopefully be in a better place; I will still be a mom and student but I want to grow as a business owner :), and I think that this conference would offer a bit of a boost for me, something I really need and will need once this huge transition is in full swing.

I love photography. I love sitting back and watching a cute family, a cute couple… favorite moments are those in-between moments that maybe aren’t “traditional” or expected. I love the giggles, the tender moments before a couple leans in to kiss each other, and the awesome confidence of a person!
Thank you Amanda! I hope to win this! *fingers crossed* πŸ™‚

  37. Photography not only inspires my imagination, but feeds my soul as well! I’ve only had my business for a few years and God has graciously allowed it to continuously grow! Photography is not about the photographer, but about creating a portrait that displays a person’s soul and their full personality. This is why I desire to explore, dive deep, and create more with each session and each person I am blessed to interact with. I am by no means an expert photographer, but I am excited at the thought of coming to this conference to learn from wonderful and inspiring women who do it with such passion and joy!

  38. Kegan Marie says:

What I love most about this industry is that photography is what YOU make it out to be. It is entirely YOUR masterpiece! If your desire is to capture the love & life of a wedding, & everything related to weddings, you can. If you want to take beautiful portraits of newborn babies or young children, you most certainly can. If you want to take on lifestyle photography, GO for it! If you simply want to explore all of the wonderful opportunities that photography has to offer, no one is stopping you & the SKY is the limit!
I have only recently started to journey down this new & exciting path with photography, but thankfully I have started this adventure with a wonderful & encouraging support group of experienced photographers at my side. They have taught me that if you have any desire at all to develop your skills & hone in on your OWN talent, the dream is yours & yours alone to chase for as far as your willing to go.
In learning all that there is to possibly learn about your camera, the additional equipment, as well as the different apertures, ISO settings, white balance, etc., you can capture the world around you by simply looking at it through a different view, your lens.
In capturing life’s most precious moments, from it’s new beginnings & it’s sacred treasures to it’s sometimes tragic endings, you help to tell a story that so many can relate too. In this story, the audience can draw all that they need or want from your single shot or from an entire series. They will see what you see, feel what you feel, & in just a small shimmering moment life will have been frozen in time, caught by your lens & trapped in your work to be shared for a lifetime. This is why I love photography & why I want to share it with the world. So thank you Amanda for helping me to find my passion & for sharing this new & exciting journey with me. I will never fully be able to put into words how much I truly appreciate all that you’ve done to inspire me. <3

  39. The Lord has grown my business far greater then I could have ever imagined! I love being apart of this industry because I love to be able to share in such special moments with them. Capturing their love and happiness is so amazing! I love sharing life with these people and building relationships with them. It is such a fun and thrilling journey to be apart of. Always growing and always working on being a better person and capturing other people in such a unique way! I love it!

  40. Art/Photography is in my bloodline, passed down through several generations. I’ve been taking pictures since I was a little girl, but never dreamed my passion could become reality.
I looked at my friends wall, covered in pictures I had taken on a beach trip, and realized this is something I want to do on a professional level. I want to create something for my clients that can’t be put into words. That can only be expressed by images, created in the moment.
I am still at the very, very beginning stages of starting my business. I have so many questions and ideas. I am so overwhelmed and inspired. I absolutely cannot wait to watch, listen, learn, develop, create, grow.
I look forward to meeting you at Nick and Tonya’s wedding next month, and learning much from you in the future. I would love to be able to hear you speak at such an inspiring event in March. I’m excited for the future!

  41. I absolutely love working in this industry because I am in love with true love. I feel like too often in our busy lives we forget to stop and soak up the beauty around us. The moment slips away but my job allows me to give clients that moment to cherish forever. I love to capture that beauty and that emotion. I want a senior to remember how eager they were to graduate and tackle the real world. I want a bride and groom to remember how everything clicked between them, the joy and pure happiness they felt on their wedding day. I love to inspire people to see the beauty in this world, the beauty in themselves, and the beauty in others through my photographs.
