The Power Of Editing Manually | Photography

I have learned the expensive and hard way that NO Photoshop action gives me the LOOK that I love. Boy did I waste a ton of money on those things in hopes that it would make me better and make my work appear more beautiful! But it came down to MANUALLY editing my images and I’m so glad I put myself through the ringer getting that down. I hear a lot of people talking about how impatient they are when it comes to learning this. Well, it’s worth it..and sometimes great things don’t come so easy..that’s part of this learning process!

I now LOVE my hand tweaked, manually-edited-in-Lightroom look that makes me literally work for the final product that speaks to my style and brand! I love clean, brightly exposed and as properly balanced images as possible and these two ends of the spectrum before and after examples are how I’ve learned to gently and lightly edit an image that was almost SOOC (straight out of the camera) perfect complete with a pretty little discrete touch of sunflare, and how to rescue an image that was shot as BEST as possible waaay after we had lost the sun! Yes– post sunset with no artificial lighting- wide open with 2000 ISO!

Practice with editing in LR, slide the little ticker things up and down and figure out how it do what it do. If you don’t, you’ll never know. Yep– it’s tedious..but Lightroom is MEANT for us! And when someone goes “oh my gosh you don’t use Photoshop!?” I say OH MY GOSH no. I don’t. I don’t need it!! I only EVER used Photoshop when I used actions which are amazing for some people but not what I need personally!!  I love showing people all of this in mentoring, too. I have no problem sharing away with my mentor and Q+A girls! The Outer Banks Winter Getaway being announced this week will include a Lightroom portion on the first day using images shot that day for us all to see! Can not WAIT!

Very discrete editing — only lifting the exposure to brighten Cammy’s skin!
Before After 1

VERY detailed editing (for me, which is like using 6-7 sliders tops!) where I had to compensate for a completely gone sun! It worked GREAT! 🙂

  1. VBery true.. I I have tried a few actions previously but then had to go back and tweak them anyway. I much prefer editing each image one by one.

Love it. I’ve also been down the action road where money was spent and wasted. :/ So glad I found out sometimes you have to work a little harder for a better end result. 😉

I don’t use photoshop either….LR is where its at. There is no action to get a picture where I want it!!! We might be soul mates haha
