Your New Life | New Mom Series

In a sea of “get sleep while you cans” and “goodbye to your freedoms!” — I’m gonna be your sunshine today, new mamas ๐Ÿ™‚

Almost without a doubt, on every pregnancy announcement, pregnant status, etc on social media..there’s “that guy” — the one who has to write something other than congrats, they have to write a warning or a wompwomp as we call them. Of all of them, the get sleep while you can is probably the one I see the most, and honestly I’m not sure if the writer knows this but sleep hours don’t carry over, so no, don’t sleep yourself into oblivion because you can’t cash those in when the baby gets here, lol! Some parents (especially when BRAND new) are super excited to get up and lose a little sleep over their new baby’s needs, especially the parents who prayed and prayed and hoped for that child. And yes, sleep deprivation isn’t wonderful but I am so thankful for a new baby’s health and presence I tend to run on a lot of adrenaline in the beginning for months ๐Ÿ™‚ When they’re a toddler and being a butthead and not sleeping though? Oh and teething around the 6-9 month mark? That’s another story, we’ll come back to that some time ๐Ÿ™‚ It does get hard! But people shouldn’t write that on someone’s page who is still in the middle of actually growing their child, lol.

Your life isn’t over. Your freedom isn’t gone. You will not NOT travel again. Guess what?! It wasn’t until AFTER I had a baby that I ended up shooting two international weddings, another in Key West, visited New York City and got to go to other various places that I otherwise may not have traveled…children don’t “take” you from that. I’m about to take part in my third Creative at Heart Conference and guess what…the whole family is coming, AGAIN ๐Ÿ™‚

Your new life is a lucky and beautiful one. You will have that birthing experience, whatever it is..and then you will hold your son/daughter for the first time. You will smell this amazing new baby smell, you’ll have this incredible instant connection with them and vow within milliseconds to FIGHT to protect and love them forever. You’ll never know a feeling like those moments again but you’ll never, ever forget how that felt…EVER. You’ll hold them like a little burrito all swaddled up and they’ll know who you are without question. They know your voice, your warmth, they are the only ones who know how YOUR heart sounds from the inside, and their hearts grew within you, besides yours. There is no greater love and what is coming to you, new mama, is pure joy.

Of course..lots of diapers, spit up, loud cries, hard days, that lack of sleep and stuff, too!? Sure! It’s all inevitable, but please don’t go into it with the mind frame that all of those hard things take away the HAPPINESS of it all.ย I’ve always felt so awkward and not able to connect with moms who have to complain about mothering daily. Connecting and relating with others is one thing, but I can’t pretend it’s all that bad because well, I just freaking love my kids and I kind of am an annoyingly happy person most of the time with a few minor hormonal exceptions as it is. Even when they’re INSANE, I truly obsessively love being a mama. I DO need breaks and I joined the gym which gives me little intervals to take care of myself AND get exercise, and I go on date nights with Mike now, too…but if you are head over heels in love and enjoyingย it…congrats, we’re the lucky ones to feel this way about parenting despite all the challenges and hard times.

For a late disclaimer to include, I know everyone’s life is different and circumstances aren’t the same, but if you don’t go into this with a positive and optimistic mind frame, you’re not doing yourself that favor you deserve. This is clearly a relative topic but generally for the new parents who are EXPLODING with joy to announce their news and then instantly pulled down by the Negative Nancies. Listen to your friends/family that have GOOD things to say…when you need help, ask for help, you’re not alone if it’s hard…but just don’t go into it negatively. Your mind frame and attitude could be the big determining factor of your actual experience ๐Ÿ™‚
